Lámha Suas was set up in 2010 by Deborah Sheeran, a primary school teacher from Dublin. Deborah had been going out to Uganda for some years and knew that education was the key to helping improve people lives, especially the lives of girls and young women.
She knew she wanted to work in Mubende, the district with the worst education record in Uganda. She contacted the Irish Embassy in Kampala, told them what she wanted to do and asked them for any contacts they may have in the area. They put her in contact with Kakeetos Stephen, who was the District Education Officer of Mubende at that time. He recommended Madudu as the place to base Lámha Suas’ programmes and the rest, as they say, is history….
Since then, Lámha Suas has brought 20 volunteers out to live and work in Madudu. We have provided Kisoolo Primary School with new latrines and Madudu Primary School with a kitchen, grinding machine, grinding machine shelter, a new staffroom, a Rain Water Harvesting System and five 10,000L water tanks, fruit trees, doors and window shutters on all classrooms, we have renovated the teacher quarters, painted all the classrooms, employed an extra teacher and a school cook and converted the original school building to staff accommodation and a library for the children.
In 2015 we started a Safe Motherhood Programme in partnership with the Rural Health Care Foundation Uganda. We have also developed a strong friendship with the Juliana School for the Deaf in Mityana and Busibozi Teacher Training College.
In 2016, we will start working with 2 new schools: Kawuula Primary School and Kiruuma Primary School. We look forward to developing a good relationship with both schools.
